Editor’s Note: The following was sent in by one of our readers and we felt compelled to bring this to you as well. It’s a touching, surprising story that will make you think a little. Also included are some quotes from the Reverend Billy Graham. They are worthwhile as well.
—————
It was a cold winter’s day that Sunday. The parking lot to the church was filling up quickly. I noticed as I got out of my car fellow church members were whispering among themselves as they walked in the church.
As I got closer I saw a man leaned up against the wall outside the church. He was almost laying down as if he was asleep. He had on a long trench coat that was almost in shreds and a hat topped his head, pulled down so you could not see his face. He wore shoes that looked 30 years old, too small for his feet, with holes all over them, his toes stuck out. I assumed this man was homeless, and asleep, so I walked on by through the doors of the church.
We all fellowshipped for a few minutes, and someone brought up the man laying outside. People snickered and gossiped but no one bothered to ask him to come in, including me. A few moments later church began. We all waited for the preacher to take his place and to give us the Word, when the doors to the church opened.
In came the homeless man walking down the aisle with his head down. People gasped and whispered and made faces. He made his way down the aisle and up onto the pulpit where he took off his hat and coat. My heart sank. There stood our preacher… he was the “homeless man,” and the last parishioner to arrive for service.
No one said a word. The preacher took his Bible and laid it on his stand.
“Folks, I don’t think I have to tell you what I am preaching about today.”

“Too often, things become our focus of worship. It is at that point that material goods become our masters rather than our servants. You must choose whom you will serve. Wit it be God or money?”
“Materialism has become the god of too many of us. The bible teaches that preoccupation with material possessions is a form of idolatry and God hates idolatry. The Bible declares, ‘What shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and lose his own soul.’”
“If a person gets his attitude toward money straight, it will help straighten out almost every other area of his life. The chief motive of the selfish, unregenerate person is *get.* The chief motive of the dedicated Christian should be *give*.”
“The world’s favorite verb is *get.* The verb of the Christian is *give.* Self-interest is basic in modern society. But in God’s kingdom self-interest is not basic…..selflessness is.”

Praise the Lord for his mercy and grace, this is a lesson for us all, Jesus died so that all could have a chance for eternal life, his message is for us to love the unloveable, for that’s what he did, and his grace reaches down even unto a sinner like me, thank you Jesus!

I experienced a similiar illustration, however, the homeless man was sitting in our congregation. After service was over, he began to cry out loud. I asked him if he needed anything and be began telling me about his life. The ushers asked me if I needed help and pointed to the homeless gentleman and said that he needed help. He got up and walked away. We, christian should stop looking at the outer appearance and look for the need of people outside our comfort zone. Thank you.

True enough, a good christian must not judge anyone..as God taught us to love one another, so each of us must keep in our heart, mind and soul that LOVE must
be given to our brothers and sisters in the whole world.

Sadly, I have been to churches that would have not let Jesus in. Needless to say I do not attend any of those churches. I always remember to love one another because it is possible one day one of us could very well be in that situation.

God help us to see the light, we are so much in the dark. I hope when Jesus comes, we all will not be too preoccupied or judgemental and missed Him.

There is so much we still need to learn. Or maybe we know already but forget from time to time, and so we need to be reminded. We are all human rich or poor, black or white….and what a wonderful world this would be if everyone realized this.

Today’s world is all about high tech that it’s being used in the wrong ways, whatever happened to the good old days when being a Christian Believer didn’t take a second thought you just did the right thing and helped WITHOUT JUDGING. The problem today is that the past got greedy so now we’re being plagued by the man above and that’s been happening for sooo long that you would think we would learn our lesson, well, NO we have not, instead, we have gotten so self centered it makes me wonder why or what’s the reason we go to church if we can’t be true to the man above? My thought is: We’ve become too spoiled with material things that in our mind we cannot do without, we won’t know unless we try.

Several years ago aman who was obviously mentally retarded, lived alone and was not very hygienic used to come to our church. Even in the hottest weather he wore a heavy winter overcoat and several layers of not too clean clothes, He had a long, straggly beard and hair and believed himself to be the King of Scotland. He always sat next to me in the last pew nearest the door and was always the first in the queue for tea and biscuits after the sevice in the main hall. I am proud to say that everybody went out of their way to talk to him and find out where he was staying as there was a deep desire to help him. He never did reveal where he lived and one day he was missing. After a few weeks of enquiry it turned out that ‘King John’, as we had begun to call him, had been found dead on the street. He was given a pauper’s burial by the authorities and there was no-0ne apart from a coucil official and the policeman who found him in attendance. But I thank God that in the few months he graced our church gathering he was treated like an honoured guest.

Thanks, for that story , it is true that their are a lot of people called hemself Christians, but practically forgets the reality..I remember one founder ..Name Albert Benjamin Simson.. he step out from the rich church, because most of his members specialy the elders opposed his plan to help and accept the poor, and homeless to the church…Their are christians in the name but..refuse to greet those lowly..we all come to this world with nothing, and return to dust nothing to carry ..but the good deeds that we do it will be remember until the end of the days
Thanks..

We look but do not see.
We ask but never listen.
We talk but never understand.
A person is a son a daughter a mother a father
a sister a brother
How long before a friend.

This is the reason that our churches are so empty today and the so called Mega churches are just that; cavernous buildings full of empty people who gather together once or twice per week to get our ears tickled, but we don’t want to know anything about ‘rescuing the perishing or caring for the dying’ as we who know the grace of God aught to be doing. As the song says I pray that the ‘church will arise’ Lord let Your church arise.Amen

In response to comments. “Today’s Mega churches are cavernous buildings full of empty people.” They are people with love and heart and caring, perhaps more accepting of everyone, like the homeless, downtrodden. I have experienced both, I don’t believe God judges where we worship, just that we do.

Jesus christ has revealed himself to us in many ways but our hearts are haddened and easy to forget his word.I think it is lack of humility that is still hunting us today. We are so puffed off by pride and material things that will not be put into our grave when we die.May God have mercy on us and give the grace to always see him in the poor and the refuges and also in the migrants that are suffering in our countries.

Calling one’s self a “Christian” and being a true follower of Christ are often two different things. As recorded in Matthew 25, Yeshua (Jesus) gave a stern warning to those who simply “passed by,” pointing out that when they did so, they were also passing Him by. One way to view the “down and outers” is to see them as our relatives. Most of us, if we know that a relative is in some sort of serious trouble, would try to assist. Another way, perhaps even better, is to view them as Yeshua’s (Jesus’) poor relatives. When the King of kings asks us to look after some of His poor relatives, we should regard it as an honor and privilege.

By this episode I remember the parable of the “Good samaritan” as they all passed the wounded man and there was only one who came to his rescue.

Every man (woman) be counted a liar.. there is only one Word that is Faithful and True.
It is not what one says that proves the value of a person. It is WHAT ONE DOES that will endure and be as gold. Words are nothing but air,Actions are as rushing rivers or solid mountains.. For both we will be judged.. for good or evil. Choose this day whom you will serve.
